Hong Kong police have arrested four people on suspicion of traffic offences, including one caught speeding at nearly 170km/h (106mph) – more than double the limit – on Tseung Kwan O Tunnel Road.
The suspects, aged 25 to 37, were apprehended in an operation conducted by the Enforcement and Control Division of the Traffic Department at the Kowloon East Regional Headquarters on Sunday and Monday. They are suspected of speeding, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and driving without third-party insurance.
One private car was caught travelling at nearly 170 km/h on Tseung Kwan O Tunnel Road, where the speed limit is 70 km/h.
All arrestees have been released on bail and are required to report to police in early December.
“The traffic department of the Kowloon East Regional Headquarters will continue to step up enforcement against illegal vehicle modifications, speeding, dangerous driving and other traffic violations,” it said, adding that conviction could result in imprisonment and licence disqualification.
Dangerous driving is punishable by a maximum fine of HK$25,000 (US$3,215), imprisonment for up to three years and disqualification from driving for at least six months upon first conviction.
