Hong Kong’s leader has revealed that a torch relay route for the coming National Games is being planned to showcase the city’s culture, while authorities have said that a section of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge will be sealed off for a cross-border cycling race.

Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu announced on Tuesday that he had brought back the National Games’ torch after attending a flame-lighting ceremony in Nansha of Guangzhou on October 9.

“Early next month, the torch relay will be held in Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. We are currently preparing and planning the relay in the city,” Lee told reporters ahead of his weekly meeting with the Executive Council, the top decision-making body.

“The route will showcase Hong Kong’s cultural and sporting characteristics.”

Torch-bearers representing the city will include individuals from sports and various other sectors, with more details to be announced by the government later, according to Lee.

“After more than two years of effort by multiple departments, Hong Kong is now ready and fully prepared,” he said.

The Games, to be held between November 9 and 21 across 11 cities in the Greater Bay Area, will feature more than 400 events across 34 sports, with Hong Kong hosting eight – fencing, men’s under-22 basketball, track cycling, golf, men’s handball, rugby sevens, triathlon and beach volleyball.
