Lionel Messi Sets Record with Most Assists in Men's International Soccer History

At 37 years old, Lionel Messi continues to break records.

During Tuesday’s international friendly match against Puerto Rico, Messi recorded his 60th international assist for Argentina, passing Neymar for the most all-time men’s international assists.

His latest record adds to a lengthy list of achievements for Messi. Some of his most notable records include the most FIFA World Player of the Year awards (8), the most Ballons d’Or (8) and many more. He’s second all-time on the international goals list with 114, behind Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 143.

Argentina cruised to a 6-0 win over Puerto Rico at Inter Miami’s Chase Stadium. While Messi was scoreless, he recorded a pair of assists, the second of which broke Neymar’s record. He’s also now just two assists away from reaching 400 career assists.

Argentina has been in Miami this week for a pair of friendlies, giving Messi a chance to train with his home team before Inter Miami’s season finale next week. Argentina beat Venezuela 4-0 earlier this week, though Messi did not play in that match.

Meanwhile, in club play, Messi scored a pair of goals against Atlanta United earlier this week, bringing him to 26 goals and 18 assists, both of which lead the MLS.

Inter Miami is currently in third place in the Eastern Conference with 62 points and has already punched a ticket to the playoffs, thanks in large part to a campaign from Messi that could lead to him being the first back-to-back MVP in MLS history.

After he concludes his season with Inter Miami, Messi will begin preparations for the 2026 World Cup, where he’ll look to lead Argentina to back-to-back victories.
