Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown and head coach Joe Mazzulla weighed in on who would win in a fight between them.
“I think Joe has a level of craziness but I think my craziness might surpass what he’s ever seen before,” Brown said on the Netflix series Starting 5.
“He may win in one fight, but either he’s gonna win or we’re both gonna die,” Mazzulla responded.
“If I’m going to taste death, you’re coming with me,” he added.
Mazzulla’s love of combat sports is evident, as he’s a jiu-jitsu practitioner and showed the Celtics clips of UFC fights as motivation during their run to an NBA Finals victory in 2024.
He explained why he brings up the concept of fighting when speaking to his players on Tuesday.
“There’s a fight everywhere, so you have to have an understanding about how you’re willing to do that,” Mazzulla said, per Zack Cox of the Boston Herald. “I think in fighting, you have to have self-awareness, you have to have humility, you have to know who you are, you have to know what you’re good at, what you suck at. You have to know what the opponent’s good at, what they suck at, and you have to have a level of humility of, ‘I can’t be great, we can’t be great, if we don’t do this together.'”
As for Brown, he’ll be taking on a larger role during the 2025-26 season while Jayson Tatum recovers from a torn Achilles that he suffered during Boston’s 2025 playoff run.
The Celtics will open the regular season against the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
