Book review: Stories from North and South Korea confront specter of ‘US empire’


A new anthology of Korean short stories takes an unusual approach to fiction about the North and South, organizing its selections not around author, region or era but around a single theme: the U.S. as an empire.

In the collection “Island Ablaze and Other Stories: The U.S. Empire in North and South Korean Literatures,” Koreans appear either resisting the “Yankees” in battle or seeking ways to benefit from America’s power and presence.
