Motorists from mainland China entering Hong Kong under a new travel scheme must abide by the city’s laws, the transport minister has warned.

Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan also said that authorities would have systems in place to track their unpaid penalties through their registered mainland payment methods.

Under the “Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles” scheme, motorists from the southern Chinese province will be able to apply to drive into Hong Kong next month.

The scheme, set to begin in December, will allocate 100 daily booking quotas to Guangdong vehicles, each allowing a stay of up to three days.

“All drivers entering the urban area must comply with Hong Kong laws, including traffic regulations and other relevant legislation,” Chan told a radio programme.

“We have spoken with the police, and we expect that their enforcement will be just as efficient as it is for any driver in Hong Kong.”
