The double bass player Danny Thompson was a key member of the house band on Transatlantic Sessions, which was shown on BBC TV for several years from 1995, and toured widely in the UK. He was always a joy to watch, as he manifestly loved what he was doing, and the music being produced by his fellow virtuosi.

In August 1997, along with thousands of other ageing folkies, I attended Fairport Convention’s 30th anniversary appearance at the Cropredy festival in Oxfordshire. Danny Thompson had been due to MC at the event, but had had to drop out because of a heart operation, so his son Danny Jr took over. On the last night, on stage, he phoned his father and said: “Dad, I’ve got some people here who’ve got something to say to you,” at which point the whole crowd burst into a lusty rendition of Danny Boy.
