Michael King will reportedly test free agency after two years with the San Diego Padres.

Per Ken Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, King declined his side of the $15 million mutual contract option for the 2026 MLB season, meaning he’ll be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

King is coming off a season in which he went 5-3 with a 3.44 ERA in 15 starts. He struck out 76 batters in 73.1 innings. In one postseason appearance, he struck out three batters in one inning of work against the Chicago Cubs, allowing one hit and no runs in the process.

San Diego lost to Chicago in the first round in three games.

The 30-year-old had some hurdles to navigate in his seventh MLB season. He was the Padres’ Opening Day starter and was solid for most of the spring, but he missed much of the summer because of a nerve issue. He was also on the injured list in August due to a knee injury.

Once he returned, he struggled to get in rhythm and put together a few rough outings late in the year.

Before his injury-ridden season, King put together one of the best campaigns of his career in 2024. After being traded from the New York Yankees to San Diego, the Padres converted King to a starter, and that proved to be a smart move.

He recorded a 13-9 record behind a 2.95 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP, finishing seventh in NL Cy Young Award voting.

The Padres hoped to get that version of King again in 2025, but injuries prevented him from performing at that level. Now, he’ll test free agency as he looks to return to his best form.
