Malaysian authorities confirmed the release of controversial Malaysian rapper Namewee from detention on Thursday in connection with the murder probe of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus said following submissions of investigation papers to the prosecutors’ office, Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, would be released on police bail till November 26.

“The investigation papers will be referred again to the Kuala Lumpur Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office once the postmortem report is obtained,” he said in a statement.

Namewee’s lawyer, Joshua Tay, confirmed that his client was released at 3.45pm on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Attorney General Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said investigations found no evidence linking Namewee to Hsieh’s death in Kuala Lumpur.

“If we find new leads, we will take action,” he told This Week in Asia.
