Don’t look now, but the Miami Dolphins are starting to play winning football.
Miami defeated the Washington Commanders 16-13 in Sunday’s game at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, Spain, and improved to 4-7 overall with its third win in the last four games.
The ending was anything but pretty, as the Dolphins turned it over on downs at the Washington 1-yard line with fewer than two minutes in regulation before Matt Gay missed what could have been the winning 56-yard field goal on the other side.
It was fittingly another mistake that made the difference, as Jack Jones’ interception of Marcus Mariota in overtime set up Riley Patterson’s game-winning field goal.
Washington’s disappointing campaign continued as a result with a sixth consecutive loss to drop it to 3-8. While it was without the injured Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin, this surely isn’t where it envisioned itself after reaching last season’s NFC Championship Game.
Miami is trending in the opposite direction, which is notable since the status of both head coach Mike McDaniel and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa—who went 14-of-20 for 171 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions—is a constant storyline that inspired reaction on social media:
The first half was a 30-minute reminder about how much each of these teams have struggled this season.
While there were promising signs from both offenses, overall inconsistency meant five of the six possessions before intermission stalled in field-goal attempts. Miscues such as false starts, penalties and sacks in scoring range prevented either team from finding the end zone, and Gay even missed one of the field goals for Washington on the way to a 6-6 halftime tie.
It was just a matter of time before someone scored a touchdown, and Washington broke through on the opening possession of the second half.
Hard running from Chris Rodriguez Jr. helped set up an underneath route to Deebo Samuel, and the receiver did the rest of the work for the game’s first touchdown. The Commanders defense kept the momentum rolling from there by stuffing Ollie Gordon II on third down and forcing an incomplete pass on fourth down from the Washington 2-yard line.
Miami’s inability to finish drives was the defining story of the game through the first three quarters, but it finally converted early in the fourth to tie it at 13 when Gordon finished a drive that featured plenty of De’Von Achane making plays in space.
It was Washington’s turn to make critical mistakes from there, as it turned it over on downs after reaching the Dolphins’ 1-yard line on the ensuing possession. While the defense then forced a punt, Mike Sainristil muffed it to set Miami up in ideal field position with fewer than five minutes remaining.
The Sainristil miscue seemed to be the turning point in a game, but it actually set up the string of errors from both teams to force overtime.
Ultimately, Miami prevailed in a battle of two teams trending in opposite directions heading into their bye weeks.
