A senior sports official has said that Hong Kong’s performance in co-hosting the National Games is satisfactory and that the city will explore running more events with Greater Bay Area neighbours after the region was named a candidate for future Olympic Games.
Yeung Tak-keung, head of the National Games Coordination Office in Hong Kong, said on Saturday that city authorities and their counterparts from Guangdong province and Macau could conduct a comprehensive review of their experience organising the games to identify room for improvement and future cooperation.
A review was also needed to see what other sports events could be held in the region, he said, after former International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach earlier hailed the bay area for its world-class sporting facilities and said it “could be a very important candidate for future Olympic Games”.
“The National Games is indeed a very large-scale sporting event. The central government gave us a great task and also a test,” he told a radio programme.
“We have delivered a satisfactory performance in both the organisation of the competition and the performance of our athletes.”
He added: “As for what kind of events could be held in the future, I believe that really needs to be examined and discussed in great detail.”
