The Evo SL has become a tremendous hit for Adidas, widely praised by runners and becoming the brand’s top-selling model in the category. Now, with winter conditions setting in, a reinforced version of the running shoe is stepping up to the plate.

The Adidas Evo SL ATR will release this week, Footwear News can exclusively report. Short for “all-terrain,” this iteration of the shoe features a rip-stop mesh upper that’s both water-repellant and more durable. Reducing heel slip is prioritized with a new fit for the upper, while jagged laces provide better lockdown while sitting on a soft tongue. Better grip is then delivered by a Continental outsole with 1.5mm lugs.

“The Evo SL ATR is built to take runners from the road to the gravel path and back again,” Simon Lockett, Adidas Running footwear global category director, told FN. “The intent is to provide a tool that allows runners to keep running in their favorite model that may not always be 100 percent concrete from start to finish, and it expands the ecosystem by offering water repellency.”

Adidas released the Evo SL last fall on a limited basis before a wider launch came in the spring. It borrows much of the geometry from the Evo Pro super shoe franchise, as well as the same Lightstrike Pro foam. Without carbon fiber rods, it’s proven quite versatile as runners have turned to it for daily training, tempo and long runs. The Evo SL has also gained traction in the lifestyle space, which newer colorways and more to come next year are leaning into.

“If you look at the volume that we’re doing on this shoe, it’s akin to all of our lifestyle shoes,” Ben Hodge, senior vice president of product and merchandising for Adidas North America, told Footwear News in October, adding that the number of sales is in the millions. “It talks to specialty stores, it talks to sporting goods stores, the fashion consumer and the person who wants to run errands.”

The Evo SL adds the person who wants to run on different surfaces or in inclement weather, and the list will continue to grow if Lockett’s teaser gives any indication. “The future of Evo SL is bright and is not a one-off,” he said.

The Adidas Evo SL will release on Thursday through Adidas’ website and app. Pricing is set at $160.
