Democrats press Trump to repair fraying India ties, but Republicans ignore plea

More than two dozen Democrats warned US President Donald Trump in a letter this week that his “America First” tariffs are pushing India towards China.

Republicans refused to join them, underscoring deep political divisions and testing Washington’s long-held bipartisan support for New Delhi.

The letter, which squarely blamed Trump’s policies for “creating negative consequences for both countries”, was signed by Ro Khanna, an Indian-American from California, Deborah Ross of North Carolina, and 19 others, including Raja Krishnamoorthi, another Indian-American who serves on the House Select Committee on China Competition.

Released on Wednesday, the letter urged Trump to take “immediate steps” to “reset” and “repair” the relationship.

Notably, Representative Rich McCormick of Georgia – the India Caucus co-chair – and Representative Rob Wittman of Virginia, who co-chairs the Congressional Study Group on India, both did not join the plea.

McCormick’s press team did not respond to a query from the Post. The Post also reached out to Wittman’s press team but received no response.
