Hong Kong lawmaker Michael Tien Puk-sun has announced that he will not seek another term, becoming the latest veteran to opt out of the Legislative Council election in December.
Tien, 75, on Monday said he was ready to step down and pass on the torch, instead of wondering whether to seek re-election again “when I will be 79 or even 83”.
He promised to keep contributing to Hong Kong and the country, while continuing to offer guidance on railway policies.
Meanwhile, Mark Chong Ho-fung, of the centrist Roundtable party founded by Tien, declared on the same day that he would stand as a candidate in the December 7 race.
Chong, 41, contested unsuccessfully in Tuen Mun West constituency during the 2023 district council election.
Tien, chairman of fashion brand G2000, was first elected in New Territories West constituency in 2012 and has represented New Territories North West constituency since 2021.
