LONDON — Jonathan Anderson, won designer of the year for the third year in a row at this year’s British Fashion Council’s Fashion Awards — the first under new BFC chief executive Laura Weir — on Monday evening.
“Without the BFC, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” said Anderson, who was recognised for his work as creative director of Dior and his namesake label JW Anderson, which he revamped this year. “I am only the showgirl up here, but there is an entire team of thousands of people who work in both companies. All the magic happens back in the office.”
The Northern-Ireland native, previously recognised for his work at the helm of Dior stablemate Loewe, beat out Margiela and Diesel’s Glenn Martens, Miuccia Prada, Rick Owens, Martine Rose and Willy Chavarria to take home the top prize.
In another winning streak, Grace Wales Bonner, who was recently appointed creative director of menswear at Hermès, took home the British menswear designer award for the second year in a row for her brand Wales Bonner. Sarah Burton, who received a special recognition award last year for her tenure at Alexander McQueen, won this year’s British womenswear designer award for her Givenchy, presented by actor Cate Blanchett.
British-Turkish designer Dilara Findikoğlu won this year’s vanguard award, which recognises emerging design talent at the forefront of a new wave in British fashion.
This year’s event saw designers, models, actors and other industry insiders gathered at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Hosted by American actor, director and producer Colman Domingo, the show featured a jazz performance from musician Raye and a serenade from Nigerian artist Tems, as well as an interlude from the English National Ballet, which paid homage to a hundred years of Chanel in London.
Other honourees included the founders of emerging design talent incubator Fashion East, Lulu Kennedy and Raphaelle Moore. Dior chief Delphine Arnault received a special recognition award, presented by Anna Wintour, for championing young design talent notably through the LVMH Prize, which she established in 2013.
Lebanese-British philanthropist Tania Fares, who has been co-chair of the BFC Foundation since its inauguration in 2021 and founded the Fashion Trust, also received a special recognition award in celebration of the 15th anniversary of the BFC Fashion Trust.
Commes des Garçons founder Rei Kawakubo and her partner and CEO Adrian Joffe won the Isabella Blow award for fashion creator for building influential retailer Dover Street Market, alongside DSM’s president Dickon Bowden. Meanwhile, Mr. Brunello Cucinelli won the outstanding achievement award, presented by Sharon Stone, British musician Little Simz took home this year’s cultural innovator award and the late British stylist Melanie Ward was honoured posthumously with the outstanding contribution to fashion award, presented by members of her family.
In the only political statement of the night, Anok Yai, who won the model of the year award, underscored the challenges of being a Black model and called for an end to the conflict in Sudan.
In addition to the regular awards slate, two new award categories were introduced by the BFC this year.
Kate Hawley won the inaugural costume designer of the year award for her work on Guillermo del Toro’s film “Frankenstein”, presented by veteran British costume designer Sandy Powell.
