NFL Exec Says Eagles Look Drained 'Emotionally and Physically' Amid Struggles

In the wake of losing two games in the span of four days amid a chaotic start to the season, the Philadelphia Eagles are scrambling to find answers for what ails them right now.

Per The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, one NFL executive explained the Eagles look “emotionally and physically” drained right now.

“The Eagles have looked drained, emotionally and physically. The defense we saw Thursday night was on the field for (70-plus) plays in the heat just four days ago,” the executive said.

It’s been alarming to see how much worse the Eagles have looked through six games this season when compared to how they played in 2024.

There were some notable changes during the offseason, including the loss of offensive coordinator Kellen Moore when he was hired as head coach of the New Orleans Saints, along with Josh Sweat and Milton Williams in free agency.

But many of the core contributors from the Super Bowl team returned. It just hasn’t looked the same. Their offensive line is showing cracks for the first time in what feels like the first time since Jeff Stoutland was hired in 2013.

Saquon Barkley, whose longest carry of the season is 18 yards, doesn’t seem to have the same burst. Jalen Carter has essentially missed two full games after sitting out Thursday’s loss to the New York Giants and getting ejected after the opening kickoff in Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys.

Of course, the main focus in Philadelphia has been on Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown and the passing game. Brown had the cryptic post on social media with a Bible verse after a Week 3 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Brown has downplayed any tension with Hurts, but there’s no denying the offense isn’t operating at the same level as it did last season. Whether that’s more of a reflection on the rushing attack struggling, thus not forcing defenses to play close to the line of scrimmage, or Hurts just being out of sync with his receivers is unclear.

This season currently has a similar feeling to 2023 when the Eagles fell apart down the stretch. They have plenty of time get things back on track to avoid the same dour ending as two years ago, but it’s been very jarring to see this well-oiled machine start to veer off the tracks.
