New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara suffered an ankle injury in practice on Wednesday, but the veteran reportedly avoided a long-term ailment.
Per Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football, Kamara’s ankle injury “isn’t anything serious,” but he will be day-to-day this week.
Saints head coach Kellen Moore addressed Kamara’s injury after practice on Wednesday, calling it “a little something” but “nothing concerning.”
Kamara, 30, has had a decent start to this season, recording 283 rushing yards and a touchdown on 73 carries, along with 77 yards on 17 receptions. Should Wednesday’s ankle injury sideline him for this week’s contest against the New England Patriots, backup running back Kendre Miller would presumably take on Kamara’s role in the backfield.
Miller, who is in his third season with the Saints, has already recorded a career-high 165 rushing yards and a touchdown as he looks to put together the best season of his young career.
Kamara has avoided serious injuries for most of his career, never missing more than four games in a season. Last year, he missed the last three games of the year but still recorded a career-high 950 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground, along with 543 receiving yards and two touchdowns through the air.
New Orleans rewarded him midway through the season with a two-year, $24.5 million contract extension.
The Saints, as expected, have struggled through the early going, dropping their first four games of the season before finally picking up a win against the New York Giants on Sunday.

With a forgiving schedule ahead against the Patriots and Chicago Bears, the Saints will look to string together a few wins. Having Kamara on the field would make that task much easier.
