LONDON — Sarah Coonan, managing director of Liberty retail, will step down from her role in January after 15 years with the business.
Coonan first joined Liberty in 2010, and during her tenure held several senior roles, including head of buying for beauty, home and Little Liberty, and buying director. She was named retail managing director in 2022.
“After 15 years at Liberty, it’s been an enormous privilege to be part of such an extraordinary establishment,” she said. “Liberty’s spirit of creativity and independence is truly unique, and it’s been an honor to build and lead a team so dedicated to that vision. I’m immensely proud of what we’ve achieved together, and feel confident that Liberty is in a strong position for the future.”
Liberty’s CEO Adil Mehboob-Khan said Coonan leaves “a legacy of success — we enjoyed a decade of retail growth thanks to her contributions at retail and company level. She has been a force in continuing to drive Liberty as one of London’s most distinctive and design-led retail destinations.”
He added that Coonan “has built a strong organization, has embodied the Liberty spirit and culture, and has been a great coach and friend to many. With sincere fondness, respect and gratitude, I wish Sarah all the best for her future.”
Coonan will remain in her role until Jan. 31 to ensure a smooth transition, although the store did not say who was taking her place. Her departure comes as Liberty marks its 150-year anniversary, and makes major changes in-store.
It has refurbished its restaurant, Seventy Five, opened a Fragrance Lounge and a concept space called The Beauty Studio. The latter is home to three indie brands, Violette_FR, Grown Alchemist and Vyrao, which see beauty and fragrance as a path to well-being.
The Beauty Studio sits next to Liberty’s beauty hall and is located in the store’s former chocolate shop, which has its own entrance on Carnaby Street.
