A new era may be dawning in Cleveland.
After Dillon Gabriel and the Browns fell 23–9 to Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road Sunday, fans are increasingly calling for backup quarterback Shedeur Sanders to take the reins.
With the loss, the Browns dropped to 1–5 on the season, while the Steelers improved to 4–1.
Gabriel threw for 221 yards without a touchdown, completing 29-of-52 passes and took six sacks. Kicker Andre Szmyt accounted for all nine of Cleveland’s points on Sunday.
Last week, In his second start since the team traded veteran Joe Flacco, Gabriel threw two touchdowns on 19-of-33 attempts for 190 yards in a loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
Gabriel, listed at a modest 5-foot-11 by ESPN, has drawn criticism for his height, with fans suggesting he struggles to see over his offensive line, leading to risky throws on Saturday.
After Saturday’s loss, with Gabriel failing to reach the end zone, fans have increasingly called for backup quarterback Shedeur Sanders to take over.
Three straight punts from the Browns offense followed by a 16-play drive that ended in a 31-yard field goal left Cleveland trailing 9–3 at halftime.
A quick three-and-out to start the second half and a Pittsburgh touchdown in the third quarter forced the Browns to settle for a 53-yard field goal from Szmyt, entering the fourth quarter down 16–6.
Szmyt added another field goal in the fourth quarter, and the Steelers tacked on a touchdown to secure a 23–9 victory.
The Browns will host the Dolphins next Sunday.
