A good vacuum cleaner is worth every penny (especially if you have pets or messy kids), but it’s still a pricey purchase, so you don’t want to miss the Black Friday vacuum deals. If you’re less sure about what you really need, it might be tempting to add the most discounted Dyson or Shark to your cart and call it a (Black Fri)day. But before you do that, I urge you to take a not-too-deep floor-cleaning device dive with me. Because the best vacuum for you might not be the upright vacuum or robot vacuum you’ve been eyeing. In fact, a cordless stick vacuum might not even be the best bet if you have a lot of hard floors not covered by rugs or carpet. What to consider before buying a vacuum
Corded vs. cordless vacuums
Corded vacuums generally have more cleaning power than comparable cordless devices and you never have to worry about battery runtime, so they’re great for deep cleans. That said, stick vac battery life gets better every year and some of the best stick vacuums can run for up to an hour on their lowest settings. But if a cord—or the bulkiness of a canister vacuum or upright vacuum—might deter you from reaching for your vacuum cleaner, I recommend a cordless model for quick-and-easy spot cleans and daily vacuuming jobs.
Vacuum cleaners vs. vacmops
Vac mops (or mop vacs if you like) are life-changing wet-dry vacuums that suck up debris (including pet hair!) from hardwood floors, tile, LVP, and other hard floors while simultaneously mopping with a microfiber brush roll and constant stream of clean water. Some come with an optional cleaning solution too. Unfortunately, even the best vacmops still suck at vacuuming rugs and carpets, so if you have pets and lots of covered flooring, a straight-up vacuum cleaner is probably a better investment than a vacuum-mop combo (the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine is the only exception to this rule and right now you can save $300 on the Absolute model with a HEPA filter).
Attachments and accessories
Many cordless vacuum cleaners easily convert to handheld vacuums, making it easy to clean hard-to-reach areas, and both corded and cordless vacuums often come with upholstery attachments. If you don’t have kids or pets, you might not be worried about vacuuming crevices and couches, so you can take advantage of even lower sale pricing on base models in exchange for a little less versatility.
Even the most powerful vacuum cleaners will permanently lose suction power if you don’t regularly clean the filters and check the hoses for clogs. And if you have pets, you might need to do it more often than the manual suggests. These days, many robot vacuums vacuums will self-empty on a docking station, offering hands-free home cleaning, but the self-cleaning capability only goes so far since you you still need to empty the canister on the docking station regularly.

Cordless stick vacuum deals
Right now, the best cordless stick vacuum deals are from Dyson. You can save $300 on our favorite model, the V15s Submarine, which a powerful dry vacuum with a wet mopping attachment. It’s truly the only floor cleaning device you need even (or especially) if you have pets and kids. If you’re confused about the models below, the V15 is a dry vacuum only, the V15s is the V15 but with a wet-mopping head, and the V15s Absolute has the wet-mopping head and a HEPA filter. If you want a less powerful (read: less expensive) Dyson stick for quick cleanups in between deeper cleans, the Dyson V9 Motorbar model is also on sale at multiple retailers right now too.
If you already have a powerful vacuum cleaner for carpet and rugs, but want something that will efficiently clean your hard flooring, a mop vac is the way to go. These devices do both simultaneously, and they do it well, especially if you opt for a high end model from Tineco. Robot vacuums are much smarter than they used to be, and they have more suction power too. The best models self-empty on a charging and many even have built-in mopping functions. If you’re going to use a robot to clean your floors, you might as well have it vacuum and mop. And if you’re going to invest in something that advanced, it’s best to take advantage of one of these great deals. While we haven’t tested any of these models specifically, iRobot Roombas have historically performed well in our testing, and we’ve also been impressed with models form Eufy and Roborock.
