A veteran Hong Kong lawyer has been fined HK$2,000 (US$257) for careless driving and failing to provide information on demand, after a magistrate found the defendant had endangered road users’ safety by crossing a double white line last year.
Eastern Court on Monday ruled that Senior Counsel Alan Hoo failed to exercise the sufficient care and attention expected of a reasonable and prudent driver when he overtook two cars and nearly hit three pedestrians crossing the road.
The 74-year-old lawyer’s car crossed a double white line when it overtook a private car and a taxi that made a temporary stop on a section of Robinson Road outside the Panorama Gardens residential estate in the evening of August 14, 2024.
Dashcam footage showed Hoo’s car did not attempt to slow down despite an adult and two children crossing the road after alighting from the taxi.
No personal injury or property damage was reported in connection with the incident.
In his verdict, Magistrate Kestrel Lam Tsz-hong said Hoo had overtaken the cars without first confirming what disrupted traffic.
