Justin Thomas, a two-time PGA Championship winner with 16 PGA Tour victories to his name, announced on Instagram that he has undergone a successful microdiscectomy and will miss the beginning of the 2026 season as he recovers.

“I’ve had some nagging hip pain for a handful of months and after some time off and worsening symptoms, an MRI showed I had a disc problem that needed to be treated,” Thomas wrote in part.

“I had a successful microdiscectomy performed yesterday at Hospital for Special Surgery in NY and have already been released from the hospital. I’m so grateful to the doctors and staff there for all their hard work and support.

“My next few weeks will be a lot of resting before the rehab process begins. I have a great team behind me who I fully trust to get me back to a better place than I was before!”

Last season, the 32-year-old Thomas won his first tournament in three years, taking down the RBC Heritage in a playoff versus Andrew Novak.

Unfortunately, Thomas had a tough time in the majors, missing the cut at the PGA Championship and U.S. Open and finishing outside the top 30 at the Masters and Open Championship.

Thomas’ year ended at the Ryder Cup, when he went 2-2. He finished the tournament on a high note with a singles victory over Tommy Fleetwood.

Overall, it was a solid year for Thomas, who is ranked as the No. 8 golfer on the Official World Golf Rankings. He was also a runner-up three times and a top-10 finisher on eight occasions.

As far as a timeline for recovery and return goes, Thomas stressed patience but noted he will be sitting out to start next year.

“Before you ask, I’m not putting any tournament on the calendar or specific time for returning. While I will miss some events in the beginning of 2026, I want to be very smart and patient in letting my disc fully heal so it isn’t an issue again. I’m very lucky that the game of golf allows us to play at a high level for a long time, and that’s what I plan on doing – this procedure will allow me to do that injury free in the future. Can’t wait to see y’all back out there.”

Next season begins on Jan. 15 with the Sony Open in Hawaii. The following four events, in ensuing weeks, are the American Express, the Farmers Insurance Open, the WM Phoenix Open and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which is the first signature event of the year.

It appears Thomas will miss Sony Open at minimum and a few more events. Ultimately, the hope is that Thomas gets back to 100 percent health ASAP. He’s one of the best and most well-rounded golfers in the world at his best and capable of winning any tournament he enters.
